Last night, as Veronica was eating dinner , I told her "Finish up Honey because you have to try and do your homework before you go to AWANAs." She whined a little and asked if she could do it in the morning. I went on to explain to her that her homework was important because it is for school and her education and that she would not be allowed to go to AWANAs if it started to interfere with her schoolwork. That is when she caught me off guard with an innocent yet very serious statement.
"Daddy, I thought AWANAs was more important because we learn about God there."
Wow! Such a simple statement but very true. How do you explain it to a five year old that sometimes we have to do things in the secular world before we can learn more about God. She had actually had me stumped for a minute or two.
Once I built my defense in my head I started of by saying that AWANAs was a fun time to learn about God and that we had to do our work before we could have fun. Another statement I would come to regret because of her next statement. "Daddy but we learn about God at Church too, and that is important." She almost got me to say that Church was not as fun or a more important time to learn about God, but I caught myself. I told her that Church was fun too and also very important, and just like Daddy has to go to work throughout the week before he can go to Church and Class she has to take care of her responsibilities before she can go to AWANAs. Lucky enough for me, she accepted this answer, however I did allow her to wait until the morning to do her homework.
But now as I sit here I wonder, should I have told her that she was right and that God is more important than writing out three sentences? How do we set our priorities and which do we rate the highest?
Next week I will touch more into this topic with my thoughts on this. So you will have to tune in then. Until then feel free to post some of your answers and thoughts. I would also love to hear what any of you would have done in this situation.
Thank you and God Bless.
